OCEAN OUTLOOK
Questions on the Gemini Alliance
In the next couple of months, we should expect updated information on the Gemini alliance. Shippers and Freight Forwarders need details and time to assess if this is a superior product in the market. Will the shuttle network work for you as a customer? Will the hub and spoke model be able to perform as efficiently as expected if the Red Sea diversions drag on throughout 2025?
Calling at main transshipments hubs in Asia and Europe seems to be what carriers are doing right now to stretch capacity – but it creates congestion. Does this prompt Gemini to introduce a different network from the get-go?
Finally, will Gemini deliver top reliability now that the alliance partners rely (almost) exclusively on owned/controlled hub terminals? Transit time data will answer that question.
Geo-politics in supply chains
Geo-politics is the one theme that dominates all the others in the second half of the year. Whether it is the political situation in the wider area of Middle East, higher US import tariffs on Chinese goods, naval operations in South China Sea or civil unrest in Bangladesh, all these situations (and more) have the potential to disrupt ocean supply chains, cause disruption and shift market dynamics.
